What is concrete floor polishing process?

We generally start with a 50 grit resin-bond diamond, and progress through six steps to a 1500, or 3000 grit polish for an extremely high-gloss finish. This process is called lapping, and the trick is to know when to switch to the next, even finer grit.

Stage 1 –
Rough Grinding

We’ll start by removing any existing coatings, if required, and sealing any cracks with an epoxy or other semi-rigid filler. After that we’ll grind the concrete down using coarse diamond segments, bonded in a metallic matrix. This removes minor pits, blemishes or stains from the floor and depending on the condition of the concrete, may take three or four steps with progressively finer grades.

Stage 2 –
Hardening &
Protecting

Next, we’ll apply an internal impregnating sealer that sinks into the concrete to harden it. This protects it from the inside out, and eliminates the need for a topical coating, reducing the maintenance even further.

Stage 3 –
Polishing &
Finishing

Now we’ll grind the concrete with diamond abrasives, embedded in a plastic or resin matrix. We’ll use ever finer grits of polishing disc until the floor achieves the desired sheen, and then finally, there’s an option to apply a penetrating sealer as an additional stain guard.

Dry polished concrete floors

This technique involves using a specialized type of floor buffer designed to grind away layers of unwanted material without using water or chemical compounds. By using fewer resources, this method helps to conserve energy while also resulting in less waste material than other floor polishing methods. Dry floor polishing can also provide a more refined and uniform finish; however, it requires careful preparation before it can be completed and offers little flexibility for changes once the process has been started. Despite these drawbacks, dry floor polishing remains one of the most cost-effective ways to improve the look and feel of concrete floors. With its ability to create a range of surfaces – from matte finishes to glossy luster – dry floor polishing is an increasingly popular way to enrich interior spaces with color and shine. Varying the intensity and speed of grinding results in different levels of glossiness, creating rich depths in residential and commercial flooring projects worldwide. By carefully balancing cost efficiency, environmental benefits, and aesthetics, dry polished concrete floors offer endless possibilities for adding life to any space.

Wet polished concrete floors

This approach uses water to cool the diamond abrasives and eliminate grinding dust. The water reduces the friction, and acts as a lubricant increasing the life of the polishing abrasives, however it creates a tremendous amount of mess. Slurry that needs to be collected and dispose of in an environmentally sound manner. The use of water in this method to cool the diamond abrasives and reduce friction makes for a safer polishing experience. It also requires that you collect slurry after every few minutes to be disposed of via proper disposal methods to avoid environmental pollution.

A combination of the two

This is where we’ll use dry polishing for the initial grinding steps, when more concrete is being removed - and as the surface becomes smoother we’ll switch to wet polishing. We'll use a gentle, dry polishing technique for the first few weeks to ensure that our work is smooth and pores are removed. As soon as you need less material taken off, we can switch to wet works.
